Today’s Woman

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

The most recent information on women provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that the average woman today is 63.8 inches tall (a little over 5′ 4  1/2″), weights 164.7 pounds, and has a waist circumference of 37 inches.  This means that the average woman is at the very least “overweight” based on BMI calculation (~28).  A waist circumference of greater than 35 inches in women puts them at a greater risk for heart disease than those with smaller waistlines.

Women must seek a healthy weight not an ideal weight despite the images thrown your way daily in the popular media.  Find an activity that you like and begin to do it, immediately. The miracle that you may be looking for later in a pill, is already within you [it's your will to take responsibility for your health.]

AFT/PSRP Health Fair

Monday, April 12th, 2010

The AFT/PSRP conference in Orlando over the past weekend was fabulous.  Support personnel came together from various cities and participated in various conference activities, one of which was the health fair.  Participants were able to have their blood sugar and cholesterol level readings, in addition to blood pressure.  In my fitness booth, I was able to give information on physical activity and exercising with resistance bands.  I also talked to participants about metabolic syndrome while distributing tape measures for waist circumference measurements.  Pedometers were distributed as well as information on how to properly wear them and how many steps should be taken each day.  It was a fabulous experience and I thoroughly enjoy working with the organization and its members.

HEALTH CARE for America

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

In a historical vote by Congress, the American people have been awarded with a Health Care Reform Bill.  The richest country on earth has decided that all her people will have some health coverage.  While this is a monumental occasion I am certain that it wont come without a cost to you.

You are going to have to become a “good steward” of what God has given you.  To whom much is given, much is required.  Your body requires that you maintain it!  You need to make sure that you perform preventative maintenance on it regularly.  In addition, you want to give it the best gas possible.  You may want to try eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and smaller portions of lean meats.  In addition, keeping soda, alcohol, sugary drinks to a minumum and increasing 100% fruit juices and water.

You may also want to look for ways to stop smoking and limit your exposure to those types of toxins.

Finally, it will be inevitable that you begin to become more physically active.  The lack of physical activity has caused an increase in premiums for those of you who were fortunate enough to have health insurance (whether you know it or not).  It is all a butterfly effect.  Your health and wellness will affect others in some way: either physically (viruses passed around at school, work, bus, plane, train) or financially (higher premiums or higher health care because of increased ER visits).

Get well and be well AND help us keep this cost of health care down…for you and generations to come.

FREE YMCA MEMBERSHIPS in FEB ‘10

Friday, January 29th, 2010

In an effort to curb the obesity epidemic in children, the YMCA’s in Pennsylvania will be offering a free membership for 7th graders beginning on February 8, 2010.  In addition, discounts will be offered for the additional family members.  This is a wonderful opportunity.

Remember, your health is your responsibility.  Go and enjoy the fun.

It will be one of the best investments you’ve ever made.  Just think, most of you spend twice the amount of these memberships on your family cell phone package!  Here’s the link…
